Retention, Graduation, & Employment

Based on Fall 2012 (US News, 2016),
  • Full-Time Retention Rate:  52%
  • Part-Time Retention Rate:  34%
Based on Fall 2010 cohort graduating or transitioning-out by 2013:
  • Graduation Rate:  18%
  • Transition-Out Rate:  18%
Fall 2013 entering students who are Full-Time first-time undergraduates:  49%
Of the programs Wayne Community College reported in 2011-12 (Wayne Community College, 2016), three programs stand out as taking additional time for many students to complete.  These programs are:  Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration; Cosmetology Certificate; and Medical Office Administration:  Medical Insurance Certificate.  Additionally, a few programs required to report had few or no graduates.

Since the top three institutions to which Wayne Community College students transfer are Eastern Carolina University, North Carolina State University, and the University of North Carolina Wilmington (North Carolina Community Colleges, 2016), graphs are included for these institutions:

It can be observed that taking an extra year to complete a 2-year program has increased the completion rate, but adding yet another year did not make much of an additional difference.  Additionally, transfer students completed at lower rates than their non-transfer counterparts except at North Carolina State University in 2011 when transfer students graduated at a higher rate than their non-transfer peers.

It can be observed that transfer students from Wayne Community College into the North Carolina Community College system, as well as into Wayne's top three transfer institutions, have similar category distributions (AA/AS Degree, Other Associate Degree, No Degree 30+ hours, and No Degree Under 30 hours) for the same year.  Additionally, in the recent past, the number of students in the category of Other Associate Degree has increased for students transferring.  It can also be observed that the percentage of students transferring with an AA/AS Degree is roughly the same as the percentage of students transferring with No Degree 30+ hours.
